Frequently Asked Questions
Does the school cover the visa expenses for me and my family?

Yes, the school covers all direct visa and work document-related expenses for the employee and their accompanying direct family members (spouse and children), and they do not count against your relocation allowance.

The coverage of indirect expenses is subject to approval.

How does the accommodation work in Tsinglan?

The housing allowance is paid to staff members as a pre-tax income, alleviating the reimbursement process. When first arriving at Tsinglan, staff members have the choice to stay in the school dorm (subject to availability, maximum of 1 month) as a transitional measure or move straight into an apartment.

HR provides full support to staff members in apartment hunting. There are options both close and a bit further away from the school. The closest option is right across the street from the main campus. Most apartments (2 or 3 bedrooms) are from RMB 3,000 to RMB 3,500.

How do staff members commute to school?

Didi (Chinese Uber) is the most used method of transportation for international staff; the average cost is about RMB 15 per trip. Some staff members commute on E-bikes, which are cheap and convenient. Driving is an option for some (the Chinese driving test can be done in English), and walking applies to those who live close to campus.

Public transportation is also available, but staff do not prefer it as the alternatives are very cheap and convenient.

Class size and work hours at Tsinglan?

The class size (homeroom) is generally 20 to 23. Work hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Divisions require homeroom teachers to arrive in class 10-15 minutes early. In addition, middle school teachers are obliged to supervise evening study sessions 1-2 times per semester, whereas high school homeroom teachers are responsible for this task on average once a month. For these extended duties during evening study sessions assigned by divisions, teachers will be granted compensatory time off. Tsinglan Academies staff and Preschool staff members follow separate work hours.

Staff members are allowed to use the school's sports facilities for one hour during work time when it does not affect teaching and learning and is approved by the divisional director.

What is the 6-day cycle?

Tsinglan teachers (except for the Preschool and Academies staff) follow a six-day schedule. If Monday is Day 1, Tuesday is Day 2, and the following Monday is Day 6. The following Tuesday is Day 1 again.

Are staff members required to work on holidays?

Tsinglan staff enjoys fully paid Chinese and Western holidays (see calendar for details), and during the long breaks, the school often hosts camps and/or programs. These programs are usually separately compensated, and staff members participate at their discretion.

In General, Tsinglan staff members are not required to work on weekends with one or two exceptions during the school year, refer to the school calendar for details.

Does Tsinglan have an orientation program for new staff?

Yes, the school's orientation program is a two-week program designed to help new teachers and staff quickly acclimate to their roles. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the school’s staff, culture, policies, and daily practices. Participants will also receive essential information on the school's teaching practices and standards, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the Tsinglan expectations. Through this program, new staff will gain the knowledge and support needed for a smooth and successful integration into the school community.

Staff members entering mid school year also receive the necessary training to help them succeed in Tsinglan.

What kind of insurance does Tsinglan provide? Is it easy to receive international medical care?

Tsinglan insures its international staff and all accompanying family members with a plan that covers almost all the illnesses a staff member may encounter. CMB-Cigna currently provides this insurance, and a table of benefits is available in our offer packet.

Global Doctor (an international clinic with an expatriate GP) is one of the most visited medical facilities by our staff members. If a second opinion is needed, numerous international medical facilities and hospitals are less than 1 hour away in Shenzhen Guangzhou, and other parts of Dongguan, and most of them have direct billing services. Songshan Lake also has reputable, outstanding general Chinese hospitals at our disposal.

Please note that the current plan comes with a 20% co-pay for private healthcare providers, with the exception (0 co-pay) for several reputable general private hospitals nearby.

Can I enroll my children in Tsinglan?

Yes, seats are guaranteed to Tsinglan staff so long as they meet the age requirements and submit the enrollment link on time (HR will advise the deadline). Tsinglan offers up to 2 children tuition waivers for international staff.

Admissions policy does apply and may supersede the guarantee of enrollment. Staff children with Special Education Needs (SEN) must report to the school while filling out the enrollment link.

Is the language barrier an issue?

Not an issue. Each year we recruit around 50% of our international staff directly from overseas, and a significant portion of our current internationals staff do not speak Mandarin, but like everywhere else, it can’t hurt to learn the local language.

What happens when the offer deadline passes?

On occasions, candidates do need extra time to consider such important decisions. If you missed the offer decision deadline, it does not necessarily mean that the position is filled and gone, however, the offer is no longer guaranteed once the deadline passes, and the school may provide an offer to the next suitable candidate.

If requested, the school may consider providing an extension to the offer deadline.
